How many days do you need in Egypt?
7 to 10 days is enough to see Cairo, Luxor and Aswan without rushing. Add 3 to 4 days if you want a Red Sea beach stay.
- Best time: go between October and April, when days are cooler.
- Visa: most visitors need one, either on arrival or as an e-visa, valid up to 30 days (about $30).
- Budget: plan on about $50 to $100 a day for a budget trip and $250 and up for luxury, excluding flights.
- Safety: the main tourist sites are well secured; use licensed guides and pre-arranged transfers.
To plan your trip to Egypt, travel between October and April, allow 8 to 10 days for Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, and book your Nile cruise and guided tours early. Start with our Egypt travel packages, or let us build a tailor-made Egypt tour around your dates, pace, and budget.
Knowing how to plan your trip to Egypt separates a rushed blur of monuments from a journey you will replay for years.
We are locals who grew up between the temples of the south and the streets of Cairo, so we know exactly where travelers thrive and where they stumble. This guide covers the season, route, visa, budget, and packing, plus the costly first-timer mistakes nobody mentions, so you can plan your Egypt trip without wasted days. Every number below is checked against 2026 prices and rules, so you can plan and book without second-guessing.
Step 1: Choose Your Trip Style First
Every good Egypt plan starts with one question: what do you want to feel when you get home? The answer decides your route, your season, and your budget, so settle it before you book a single flight.
| Trip style | Best for | Ideal length | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| History and temples | First-timers, culture lovers | 8 to 10 days | Classic Egypt tours |
| Nile cruise | Slow travel, couples | 7 to 10 days | Egypt Nile cruises |
| Family holiday | Parents with children | 8 to 12 days | Family tours |
| Honeymoon | Couples wanting privacy | 8 to 12 days | Honeymoon tours |
| Luxury | Comfort, private guides | 7 to 14 days | Luxury tours |
| Beach add-on | History plus Red Sea rest | +3 to 4 days | Hurghada tours |
Step 2: Pick the Best Time to Visit Egypt
The best time to visit Egypt is October to April, when daytime temperatures are comfortable for walking temples and tombs. Here is how the year breaks down:
- December to February: peak season. Cool days, cold desert nights, the highest prices and the biggest crowds at Giza and Luxor.
- March to April and October to November: the sweet spot. Warm, clear weather with slightly lower prices.
- May to September: very hot in Luxor and Aswan, often above 40 °C. It works if you spend most of your time in Cairo mornings, on a cruise with air conditioning, or on the Red Sea coast.

Step 3: Choose Your Route and How Many Days You Need
Most first-timers try to fit too much in too little time. Egypt is big, and the main sites are spread along 900 km of the Nile. These three routes are the ones we plan most often.
7 Days in Egypt: Cairo, Luxor and Aswan
- Days 1 to 3, Cairo: the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, the Egyptian museums, Saqqara and Memphis, and Islamic and Coptic Cairo.
- Days 4 to 5, Luxor: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Karnak and Luxor Temple.
- Days 6 to 7, Aswan: Philae Temple, the High Dam, a felucca ride, and a flight back to Cairo.
See Cairo tours, Luxor tours and Aswan tours to build it day by day.
10 Days in Egypt: Add a Nile Cruise
Keep the 7-day plan and replace the Luxor and Aswan hotel nights with a 3 to 4 night Nile cruise between the two cities. You see Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way and add Abu Simbel from Aswan. This is the route most first-time visitors tell us they would repeat. Compare options on our Nile cruises page, including a dahabiya Nile cruise if you want a quieter sailing boat, or a luxury Nile cruise.
14 Days in Egypt: Add Alexandria and the Red Sea
Take the 10-day route and add two days in Alexandria for the Mediterranean coast, then finish with three or four days of beach time in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. Fourteen days lets you travel at a human pace.
Short on time? Five to six days is enough for Cairo and Luxor only. Just don’t try to add Aswan and Abu Simbel to it.
Step 4: Decide Between Independent Travel and a Guided Tour
Both work, but they suit different travelers.
- Independent travel gives you total freedom and can cost less. The trade-off is time spent on logistics: negotiating taxis, buying tickets, and working out which sites to combine on a single day.
- A guided tour with a private guide and driver removes the friction. A good Egyptologist guide brings the monuments to life, and pre-arranged transfers mean no haggling or lost hours.
Many of our guests mix the two: they book guides and transfers for the big sites and keep a day or two free. If you are weighing group against private options, read group tours vs private tours in Egypt, and see how to get around Egypt on your own.
Step 5: Set a Realistic Budget
Your budget depends mostly on travel style and flights. These are indicative daily ranges per person, excluding international flights:
| Style | Typical daily range | What it usually includes |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Start at $50 | Simple hotels, shared tours, local transport |
| Mid-range | Start at $100 | 4-star hotels, private guide, domestic flights |
| Luxury | Start at $250 and up | 5-star stays, private guide and driver, Nile cruise |
Entrance fees, the Nile cruise and internal flights are the big extras. Our Egypt budget tours and current Egypt travel deals show what is included at each price. For a detailed breakdown, read how much a trip to Egypt costs.

Step 6: Follow a Booking Timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 6 months before | Choose your dates and route. Book flights and your Nile cruise, which sells out in peak season. |
| 3 months before | Confirm hotels, guides and internal flights. Check passport validity (six months). |
| 1 month before | Apply for your visa, arrange travel insurance, and finalize your daily plan. Use our packing list. |
| 1 week before | Reconfirm transfers, download offline maps, and carry some cash for tips. |

Step 7: Sort Your Egypt Visa
Most nationalities need a visa. You can get a visa on arrival at the airport or apply online for an e-visa. Both allow up to 30 days, and fees rose in 2026 to about $30. Check the official portal before you travel, as fees and rules change. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. Full details are in our Egypt visa requirements guide.
7 Planning Mistakes First-Timers Make
- Trying to see everything. Cairo, Luxor and Aswan already fill a week. Choose depth over a long list.
- Booking the Nile cruise last. Peak-season boats sell out first.
- Visiting in July without a plan. Luxor and Aswan are too hot for midday sightseeing. Go early or choose another month.
- Skipping a guide at the big sites. Temples without context are just stone. A good guide is the best value in your budget.
- Carrying too little small cash. Tips and small purchases are easiest in local currency notes.
- Booking separate flights without a buffer. Leave at least a day between your last tour and your international flight.
- Ignoring local advice. Our Egypt travel tips from locals and hidden gems in Egypt save you time and money.
