Itinerary

3 Nights from Aswan to Luxor

Day 1: Arrival in Aswan – Aswan City Tour

Your journey begins the moment you land at Aswan Airport or step out of your hotel, where a Daily Pyramids representative is waiting to welcome you and stay with you throughout the day. A private, air-conditioned vehicle then whisks you into the heart of the city, opening with the towering wall of the High Dam — a mid-20th-century feat of engineering that tamed the Nile’s annual flood and rescued a swathe of Nubian heritage from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

From there you head to the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying half-carved in the granite quarry where an unlucky crack forced its ancient sculptors to walk away. Seeing it in place, dwarfed by the bedrock it was cut from, gives an unusually direct window into how the pharaohs actually shaped their monuments.

A short crossing by motorised felucca then delivers you to Philae Temple, the graceful island sanctuary of Isis that was painstakingly relocated stone by stone to Agilkia Island. If time allows, an optional sail around Elephantine Island and the First Cataract adds the rugged river scenery that has drawn travellers to Aswan for centuries.

Lunch is arranged at a local restaurant before you transfer to your Nile cruise vessel to check in. Dinner is served on board, followed by your first overnight in Aswan.

Meals: Lunch – Dinner

Day 2: Kom Ombo & Sailing to Edfu

After breakfast on board, a private vehicle takes you roughly 45 km north to Kom Ombo, where the morning is devoted to its unusual twin temple. Perfectly symmetrical along its central axis, the sanctuary is shared between Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, a form of Horus, with each deity given his own mirror-image chapels, halls and ritual spaces.

You explore both hypostyle halls and inner sanctuaries before stepping into the small Crocodile Museum, home to the mummified crocodiles unearthed beside the temple.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant, after which you rejoin the vessel as she casts off for Edfu. The afternoon slips by from the deck, sugarcane fields, mud-brick hamlets and pale sandstone cliffs telling the story of Upper Egypt as they glide past.

A short on-board briefing prepares you for tomorrow’s visit, and the ship moors overnight at Edfu.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3: Edfu Temple & Arrival in Luxor

After breakfast, a horse-drawn carriage clatters through the streets of Edfu town to deliver you to the Temple of Horus, the most completely preserved of all Egypt’s ancient temples.

Behind its immense pylons you find soaring halls, shadowed sanctuaries and finely cut reliefs that recount the mythic duel between Horus and Seth alongside the elaborate rituals of the Ptolemaic era. Because so much of the fabric survives, you can trace nearly every architectural level, up to the roof terraces.

Back on board, the cruise resumes her journey north toward Luxor, with lunch served as the river slips beneath you.

On arrival you head to Luxor Temple on the East Bank, a ceremonial complex shaped over generations by rulers such as Amenhotep III and Ramesses II.

Its majestic colonnades, wide open courts and the remains of its sphinx-lined avenue evoke the heart of ancient Thebes at its ritual height. The vessel moors overnight in Luxor.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 4: Luxor West Bank & Departure

After breakfast and disembarkation, you cross to the West Bank of Luxor, the great necropolis of ancient Thebes. Your morning opens in the Valley of the Kings, where three royal tombs reveal luminous wall paintings and the sacred texts that were meant to guide pharaohs safely through the afterlife.

You continue to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, an architectural masterpiece rising in tiered terraces against the cliffs and dedicated to one of Egypt’s most formidable female rulers.

A final pause is made at the Colossi of Memnon, the pair of monumental statues that once guarded the entrance to a vast, long-vanished mortuary temple. After lunch, you are transferred to Luxor Airport or your hotel for onward travel.

Meals: Breakfast

4 Nights from Luxor to Aswan

Day 1: Arrival in Luxor – East Bank Exploration

You are welcomed on arrival at Luxor Airport or the train station by a Daily Pyramids representative and driven, in a private air-conditioned vehicle, straight to your Nile cruise vessel.

Once you are checked in, the day unfolds with a guided walk through the Karnak Temple Complex, the largest religious site ever raised by human hands, enlarged again and again over two thousand years of pharaonic ambition.

You continue to Luxor Temple, a New Kingdom jewel that was once connected to Karnak by the ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes.

Lunch is arranged at a local restaurant during the day, before you return to the ship for your first overnight in Luxor.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: West Bank of Luxor – Sailing Toward Edfu

After breakfast, you cross to the West Bank of Luxor for a guided exploration of the Valley of the Kings, where more than 60 royal tombs preserve some of the most brilliantly painted afterlife scenes ever created in the ancient world.

The visit continues at the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, its columned terraces cut dramatically into the cliffs in honour of Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh.

A brief stop follows at the Colossi of Memnon, the twin seated giants that mark what remains of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you return to the vessel as she casts off south toward Edfu, spending the night on board while the Nile slips quietly by.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples

The ship arrives at Edfu, where a horse-drawn carriage clip-clops into town for your guided visit to the Temple of Horus.

This astonishingly complete Ptolemaic sanctuary honours the falcon-headed god Horus and remains one of the most intact ancient temples anywhere in Egypt.

Back on board, the cruise sails on toward Kom Ombo, where you step ashore to explore the singular double temple dedicated jointly to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, a form of Horus.

Its perfectly mirrored plan and dramatic setting right at the river’s edge make it one of the most distinctive monuments along the Nile. Lunch is served on board as you sail on toward Aswan.

Overnight is spent on board in Aswan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Aswan Highlights and Nile Sailing

The day opens at the High Aswan Dam, the great modern landmark that reshaped Egyptian agriculture and water management and gave birth to the vast expanse of Lake Nasser.

You continue to the Unfinished Obelisk, a colossal granite monolith left in place after a hidden flaw halted its carving, offering a rare, close look at how the ancient stonemasons went about their craft.

A motorboat then takes you across to Philae Island for a guided visit to the Temple of Isis, a Ptolemaic sanctuary that was carefully relocated after the building of the Aswan Dam.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant before you enjoy a traditional felucca sailing experience around Elephantine Island, a wonderfully peaceful way to take in Aswan’s granite outcrops and river-side life.

You return to the vessel for your final overnight on board.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Departure from Aswan

After a final breakfast on board, you check out of the cruise and are transferred by private air-conditioned vehicle to Aswan Airport or the train station for your onward journey.

FAQ

How Much Does a Cruise on the Nile Cost?

Nile cruise fares shift with the length of the sailing, the standard of the vessel and what is bundled into the fare. As a general guide, expect prices from $600 to $900 per person for a 3-4 night cruise on a mid-range to luxury ship, with longer or more indulgent premium sailings sitting above that band.

What is the Best Month for a Nile River Cruise?

The sweet spot for a Nile cruise runs from October to April, when the days are pleasantly warm and the light is ideal for exploring temples and tombs. The peak of summer, from May to September, is best avoided as inland Upper Egypt can become intensely hot.

Is the River Nile Cruise Worth It?

Absolutely. A Nile cruise is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Egypt, pairing gently unfolding river scenery with guided visits to iconic temples and royal tombs. You unpack once, travel between headline sites in comfort, and soak up a genuinely memorable slice of Egyptian culture along the way.

Can You Swim in the Nile River?

Swimming in the Nile itself is not recommended, largely because of water quality, unseen currents and bilharzia risk in some stretches. As a rule, cruise vessels do not permit guests to swim in the river, though many ships offer a pool on the sun deck instead.

What is the Dress Code on Nile Cruises?

Daytime dress on board is relaxed and practical: light, breathable fabrics, comfortable shoes and a hat for shore excursions. Evenings lean toward smart casual, especially for dinner, and modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful when visiting temples, churches or mosques.
