On shore, expert local guides walk you through the soaring hypostyle of Karnak, the painted tombs of the Valley of the Kings, the perfect Ptolemaic geometry of Edfu and Kom Ombo, and the granite islands of Aswan. Itinerary

3 Nights from Aswan to Luxor

Day 1: Arrival in Aswan – Aswan City Tour

Your journey begins the moment you land at Aswan Airport or step out of your hotel, where our representative welcomes you and stays alongside for the local experience ahead. Settled into a private air-conditioned vehicle, you head first to the High Dam – a colossal feat of twentieth-century engineering that tamed the Nile’s annual flood and rescued a swathe of Nubian heritage from rising waters.

Nearby, in a working granite quarry that still bears the tool-marks of ancient masons, the Unfinished Obelisk lies where it was left thousands of years ago. A single fissure ended its life mid-cut, but the abandoned monolith is a rare window onto how such giants were shaped from the living rock.

A motorised felucca then ferries you across the water to Philae Temple, the graceful island sanctuary of the goddess Isis, painstakingly relocated block by block to higher Agilkia Island. If you fancy a little extra sailing, an optional loop past Elephantine Island and the First Cataract shows off Aswan’s rugged river scenery at its best.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant before you board your Nile cruise vessel and settle into your cabin. Dinner is served on board, followed by an overnight stay in Aswan.

Meals: Lunch – Dinner

Day 2: Kom Ombo & Sailing to Edfu

After a leisurely breakfast aboard, a private vehicle takes you the roughly 45 km north to Kom Ombo, where an unusual double temple rises directly from the riverbank. Its perfectly mirrored plan honours two very different gods side by side: Sobek the crocodile deity and Haroeris, a form of the falcon Horus.

Your guide leads you through the twin sanctuaries, the pillared hypostyle halls and the ritual chambers where priests once tended each cult in parallel. A short walk away, the Crocodile Museum displays mummified crocodiles unearthed near the temple, a striking reminder of Sobek’s living presence here.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, you rejoin the ship as she sets sail toward Edfu. The afternoon slips by from the sun deck, with sugarcane fields, riverside villages and pale sandstone cliffs unfolding on either side.

An onboard briefing sets the scene for tomorrow’s highlight before the vessel moors overnight at Edfu.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3: Edfu Temple & Arrival in Luxor

After breakfast, a horse-drawn carriage clatters you into Edfu town for a guided visit to the Temple of Horus – the most completely preserved ancient temple anywhere in Egypt.

Inside, monumental pylons, cavernous halls and finely cut inscriptions bring the great myth of Horus and Seth vividly to life, together with the daily rituals of the Ptolemaic priesthood. Because so much of the structure survives intact, you can move through virtually every level of the building right up to the rooftop terraces.

Back aboard, the ship glides northwards toward Luxor while lunch is served on the way.

Once docked, you head to Luxor Temple on the East Bank, a sanctuary refined and enlarged by rulers from Amenhotep III to Ramesses II.

Its long colonnades, sweeping open courts and sphinx-lined processional avenue speak eloquently of ancient Thebes at the height of its ceremonial splendour. The cruise moors overnight in Luxor.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 4: Luxor West Bank & Departure

After breakfast and disembarkation, you cross to the West Bank of Luxor, the ancient necropolis of Thebes. The day opens in the Valley of the Kings, where three royal tombs open their doors to reveal jewel-bright wall paintings and the sacred texts written to guide their pharaohs safely through the afterlife.

From here you climb toward the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, an architectural triumph terraced dramatically into the honey-coloured cliffs and dedicated to one of Egypt’s most formidable female rulers.

A final stop is made at the Colossi of Memnon, the pair of colossal seated statues that once flanked the entrance to a now-vanished mortuary temple. After lunch, you are transferred to Luxor Airport or your hotel for departure

Meals: Breakfast

4 Nights from Luxor to Aswan

Day 1: Arrival in Luxor – East Bank Exploration

Landing at Luxor Airport or arriving by train, you are greeted by our representative and driven in a private air-conditioned vehicle to your waiting Nile cruise vessel.

Once you are checked in, sightseeing begins in earnest at the Karnak Temple Complex – the largest religious building ever raised, extended and embellished by successive pharaohs over some two thousand years.

You then continue to Luxor Temple, a jewel of the New Kingdom that was once joined to Karnak by the ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes.

Lunch during the day is served at a local restaurant before you head back to the ship to settle in for the night in Luxor.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: West Bank of Luxor – Sailing Toward Edfu

After breakfast, you cross the river to the West Bank of Luxor to explore the Valley of the Kings, where more than 60 royal tombs preserve strikingly painted scenes of the ancient Egyptian journey into the next world.

The morning continues at the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, an architectural marvel that steps up into the cliffs in three great terraces and honours Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh.

A brief pause is made at the Colossi of Memnon, twin monumental figures that mark the vanished mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, you rejoin the vessel as she casts off and begins sailing south toward Edfu. Overnight is spent aboard while cruising the Nile.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples

The ship reaches Edfu, and a horse-drawn carriage carries you into town for a guided visit to the Temple of Horus.

This exceptionally well-preserved Ptolemaic sanctuary is dedicated to the falcon god Horus and remains one of the most complete ancient temples surviving in Egypt.

After exploring, you return to the vessel as she sails on to Kom Ombo. Here you tour a truly unusual double temple, honouring both Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, a form of Horus.

Its symmetrical plan and riverside setting make it one of the most distinctive monuments on the Nile. Lunch is served onboard as the cruise continues towards Aswan.

Overnight onboard in Aswan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Aswan Highlights and Nile Sailing

The day opens at the High Aswan Dam, an emblem of modern engineering that transformed Egypt’s agriculture and water security while giving birth to the vast expanse of Lake Nasser.

Next comes the Unfinished Obelisk, an immense granite shaft left half-cut in its quarry – a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the stone-shaping techniques of the ancient masons.

A motorboat then whisks you to Philae Island for a guided visit to the Temple of Isis, a Ptolemaic sanctuary relocated stone by stone after the Aswan Dam was built.

Lunch at a local restaurant is followed by a gentle traditional felucca sail around Elephantine Island, offering a wonderfully calm perspective on Aswan’s granite outcrops and daily river life.

You return to the vessel for a final night aboard.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Departure from Aswan

After breakfast aboard, you check out from the cruise vessel. A private air-conditioned vehicle then transfers you to Aswan Airport or the train station in good time for your onward journey.

FAQ

How Much Does a Cruise on the Nile Cost?

Fares for a Nile River cruise shift with the length of the voyage, the standard of the ship and what is bundled into the package. As a general guide, expect to pay somewhere between $600 and $900 per person for a 3-4 night sailing on a mid-range to luxury vessel. Longer itineraries and top-tier ships with more elaborate amenities will naturally climb higher.

What is the Best Month for a Nile River Cruise?

The sweet spot for a Nile cruise runs from October to April, when temperatures are pleasant and sightseeing is genuinely enjoyable. It is best to steer clear of the peak summer stretch from May to September, when the heat along the river can become fiercely uncomfortable.

Is the River Nile Cruise Worth It?

Absolutely – a Nile cruise is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Egypt, pairing effortless river travel with guided access to the country’s most iconic temples and tombs. You gain comfort, ease of movement and a deeply immersive cultural journey in a single, seamless package.

Can You Swim in the Nile River?

Swimming in the Nile itself is generally discouraged, mainly because of water-quality concerns and the unpredictable strength of the current. As a rule, cruise vessels do not permit guests to swim directly in the river.

What is the Dress Code on Nile Cruises?

Daytime dress on Nile cruises is relaxed and practical, with light, breathable fabrics your best friend under the sun. Evenings tend to be smart-casual for dinner and onboard events, while a more modest, covered-up look is recommended when stepping ashore at religious or heritage sites.
