Itinerary

3 Nights from Aswan to Luxor

Day 1: Arrival in Aswan – Aswan City Tour

Your representative greets you at Aswan Airport or your hotel and stays with you through the day’s touring. A private air-conditioned vehicle sets out first for the High Dam, the twentieth-century feat of engineering that harnessed the Nile’s flood and made possible the rescue of dozens of Nubian monuments.

From there you continue to the Unfinished Obelisk, still resting inside its ancient granite quarry where a hidden fracture halted work — a rare open window onto how pharaonic craftsmen shaped stone.

A motorised felucca then ferries you to Philae Temple, the island shrine of Isis that engineers dismantled and rebuilt block by block on Agilkia Island. Time permitting, an optional sail circles Elephantine Island and the First Cataract, framing Aswan’s dramatic river landscape.

Lunch follows at a local restaurant before you board your Nile cruise vessel and settle into your cabin. Dinner is served on board, with the ship moored overnight in Aswan.

Meals: Lunch – Dinner

Day 2: Kom Ombo & Sailing to Edfu

After breakfast on board, a private vehicle takes you roughly 45 km north to Kom Ombo, home to one of Egypt’s most unusual monuments: a perfectly mirrored double temple honouring Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, a form of Horus.

You wander the twin sanctuaries, hypostyle halls and ritual chambers, then step into the adjoining Crocodile Museum, where mummified crocodiles unearthed nearby are displayed.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you rejoin the ship as it casts off north toward Edfu. The rest of the afternoon belongs to the deck, with sugarcane fields, river hamlets and sandstone bluffs slipping past.

An onboard briefing sketches out tomorrow’s visit. The vessel moors overnight in Edfu.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3: Edfu Temple & Arrival in Luxor

After breakfast, a horse-drawn carriage clatters through Edfu town to the Temple of Horus, the most completely preserved ancient temple standing in Egypt today.

Its towering pylons, cavernous halls and carved inscriptions retell the mythic contest of Horus and Seth alongside the sacred rites of the Ptolemaic era. Almost every original level is still walkable, right up to the rooftop terraces.

Back on board, the ship pushes on northwards to Luxor while lunch is served in the dining room.

On arrival you head to Luxor Temple on the East Bank, a sanctuary shaped over the centuries by rulers such as Amenhotep III and Ramesses II.

Its long colonnades, sunlit courtyards and sphinx-lined processional way trace the ceremonial spine of ancient Thebes. The cruise stays moored overnight in Luxor.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 4: Luxor West Bank & Departure

After breakfast and disembarkation, you cross to the West Bank of Luxor, the ancient necropolis of Thebes. The day opens in the Valley of the Kings, where three royal tombs unfurl brilliant wall paintings and funerary texts written to steer pharaohs safely into the next world.

You then reach the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, a set of long colonnaded terraces built straight into the cliff face for one of Egypt’s most formidable female rulers.

A last stop brings you before the Colossi of Memnon, two seated giants that once flanked the gateway of a vanished mortuary temple. After lunch, you are transferred to Luxor Airport or your hotel for departure

Meals: Breakfast

4 Nights from Luxor to Aswan

Day 1: Arrival in Luxor – East Bank Exploration

A representative meets you at Luxor Airport or the train station and drives you in a private air-conditioned vehicle to your Nile cruise vessel.

Once you are checked in, sightseeing begins at the Karnak Temple Complex, the largest religious building ever raised, expanded across two millennia by generations of pharaohs.

You continue to Luxor Temple, a New Kingdom monument once tied to Karnak by the ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant during the day before you return to the ship for your overnight stay in Luxor.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: West Bank of Luxor – Sailing Toward Edfu

After breakfast, you cross to Luxor’s West Bank to explore the Valley of the Kings, where more than 60 royal tombs preserve richly painted scenes of the ancient Egyptian afterlife.

You then reach the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, an architectural triumph built into the cliff face and dedicated to Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh.

A quick pause follows at the Colossi of Memnon, two seated giants that mark the remains of Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, you return to the vessel as it begins sailing south towards Edfu. Overnight is spent on board as the ship glides along the Nile.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples

The ship docks at Edfu, and a horse-drawn carriage carries you into town for a guided visit to the Temple of Horus.

This astonishingly complete Ptolemaic sanctuary, raised in honour of the falcon god Horus, remains one of the most intact ancient temples anywhere in Egypt.

You then reboard the vessel as it continues towards Kom Ombo, where you tour a singular double temple dedicated jointly to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, a form of Horus.

Its mirrored plan and dramatic riverside setting make it one of the most distinctive monuments along the Nile. Lunch is served on board while sailing, and the ship then continues towards Aswan.

Overnight on board in Aswan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Aswan Highlights and Nile Sailing

The day opens at the High Aswan Dam, a landmark of modern engineering that reshaped Egyptian agriculture and water supply by creating Lake Nasser.

Next comes the Unfinished Obelisk, a colossal granite block still lying in its quarry, offering a rare look at how ancient stonemasons went about their craft.

A motorboat then ferries you across to Philae Island for a guided visit to the Temple of Isis, a Ptolemaic sanctuary relocated after the building of the Aswan Dam.

Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant, followed by a traditional felucca sail around Elephantine Island for an unhurried view of Aswan’s granite outcrops and river life.

You return to the vessel for your final overnight on board.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Departure from Aswan

After a final breakfast on board, you check out of the vessel. A private air-conditioned vehicle then takes you to Aswan Airport or the train station for your onward journey.

FAQ

How Much Does a Cruise on the Nile Cost?

What you pay for a Nile cruise depends on how long you sail, the standard of the vessel, and the services rolled in. As a working guide, expect prices from $600 to $900 per person for a 3-4 night voyage on a mid-range to luxury ship, with premium boats and longer itineraries priced above that band.

What is the Best Month for a Nile River Cruise?

The sweet spot for sailing the Nile runs from October to April, when the weather is cooler and far kinder for temple visits. It is best to sidestep the peak summer months of May to September, when temperatures in Upper Egypt climb to punishing highs.

Is the River Nile Cruise Worth It?

Absolutely. A Nile cruise pairs the calm of river travel with expert-led visits to Egypt’s most storied temples and tombs, offering an easy, comfortable and deeply memorable way to soak up the country’s ancient culture.

Can You Swim in the Nile River?

Swimming in the Nile itself is generally discouraged owing to water quality concerns and strong currents in places. Most cruise operators do not permit swimming directly in the river.

What is the Dress Code on Nile Cruises?

Daytime dress on a Nile cruise stays relaxed, with light and breathable fabrics the sensible choice. Evenings on board lean towards smart casual for dinner and events, and modest attire is best kept for visits to religious and historical sites.
