Itinerary

3 Nights from Aswan to Luxor

Day 1: Arrival in Aswan – Aswan City Tour

Your representative greets you at Aswan Airport or your hotel and stays with you through the day’s local highlights. A private air-conditioned vehicle sets out for the High Dam first, the twentieth-century feat that tamed the Nile’s annual flood and saved a wealth of Nubian temples from the rising waters.

From there you continue to the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in its granite bed where an unseen crack forced the ancient masons to walk away — a rare window into how these monuments were quarried.

A motorised felucca ferries you across the river to Philae Temple, the island shrine of Isis that was rescued block by block and reassembled on Agilkia Island. If time allows, an optional sail around Elephantine Island and the First Cataract reveals the natural rock formations that made Aswan a river frontier.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant before you board the cruise ship and settle into your cabin. Dinner is enjoyed onboard, followed by an overnight stay in Aswan.

Meals: Lunch – Dinner

Day 2: Kom Ombo & Sailing to Edfu

After breakfast onboard, a private vehicle carries you the roughly 45 km north to Kom Ombo. Here you tour the Temple of Kom Ombo, a rare mirror-image sanctuary honouring both Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris, a form of Horus, with everything from the pylons to the sanctuaries doubled along a central axis.

You explore the twin shrines, hypostyle halls and ritual chambers before stepping next door to the Crocodile Museum, where mummified crocodiles unearthed nearby are displayed.

After lunch at a local restaurant you rejoin the cruise and it slips its moorings toward Edfu. The afternoon drifts by amid sugarcane fields, palm-shaded villages and the honey-coloured sandstone cliffs of Upper Egypt.

An onboard briefing sets the scene for the following morning. The vessel moors overnight in Edfu.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3: Edfu Temple & Arrival in Luxor

After breakfast, a horse-drawn carriage clip-clops through Edfu town to the Temple of Horus, the most completely preserved ancient temple anywhere in Egypt.

Beyond its towering pylons wait cavernous halls and finely cut reliefs recounting the mythic struggle between Horus and Seth alongside the rituals of the Ptolemaic era. Because so much survives intact, you can climb through nearly every architectural level, including the rooftop terraces.

Back onboard, the cruise pushes north toward Luxor with lunch served as the river banks slide past.

On arrival you head to Luxor Temple on the East Bank, a monument shaped over generations by rulers including Amenhotep III and Ramesses II.

Its soaring colonnades, open courts and sphinx-lined processional avenue evoke the ceremonial heart of ancient Thebes. The cruise stays docked in Luxor overnight.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 4: Luxor West Bank & Departure

After breakfast and disembarkation, you cross to Luxor’s West Bank, the ancient necropolis of Thebes. The day begins in the Valley of the Kings, where three royal tombs open their doors on brilliantly painted walls and sacred spells guiding the pharaohs into the next world.

Next comes the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, a terraced masterpiece carved into the desert cliffs and dedicated to one of the few women ever to rule as pharaoh.

A final stop brings you before the Colossi of Memnon, two seated giants that once flanked the entrance to a long-vanished mortuary temple. After lunch, you are transferred to Luxor Airport or your hotel for departure

Meals: Breakfast

4 Nights from Luxor to Aswan

Day 1: Arrival in Luxor – East Bank Exploration

On arrival at Luxor Airport or the railway station, your representative meets you and a private air-conditioned vehicle whisks you to your Nile cruise vessel.

After check-in, the sightseeing opens at the Karnak Temple Complex — the largest religious building the ancient world produced, enlarged by pharaoh after pharaoh across two millennia.

You continue to Luxor Temple, a New Kingdom jewel once joined to Karnak by the ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant during the day before you return to the ship for an overnight moored in Luxor.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: West Bank of Luxor – Sailing Toward Edfu

After breakfast, you cross to Luxor’s West Bank for a guided walk through the Valley of the Kings, where more than 60 royal tombs preserve vivid scenes of the ancient Egyptian afterlife.

The route then leads to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, an architectural wonder rising in three colonnaded terraces against the cliffs, built for Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh.

A short stop follows at the Colossi of Memnon, twin seated statues marking the ruins of Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple.

After lunch at a local restaurant you return to the vessel and it begins its southward journey toward Edfu. The night is spent onboard as the ship glides along the Nile.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples

The cruise ties up at Edfu, where a horse-drawn carriage carries you into town for a guided tour of the Temple of Horus.

This astonishingly complete Ptolemaic temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, remains one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Egypt.

Back onboard, the ship sails on to Kom Ombo, where you explore the singular double temple shared between Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris, a form of Horus.

Its perfectly mirrored plan and riverside setting make it one of the Nile’s most memorable stops. Lunch is served onboard as sailing continues toward Aswan.

Overnight onboard in Aswan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Aswan Highlights and Nile Sailing

Your day opens at the High Aswan Dam, the modern engineering landmark that transformed Egyptian agriculture and irrigation by creating Lake Nasser.

You then visit the Unfinished Obelisk, a colossal granite shaft still lying in its quarry — a rare candid look at how the ancients shaped stone.

A motorboat carries you to Philae Island for a guided visit to the Temple of Isis, a Ptolemaic sanctuary painstakingly relocated after the building of the Aswan Dam.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant before a traditional felucca sails you around Elephantine Island, a serene way to take in Aswan’s granite outcrops and unhurried river life.

You then return to the cruise vessel for your final overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Departure from Aswan

After breakfast onboard, you check out of your cabin. A private air-conditioned vehicle transfers you to Aswan Airport or the railway station for your onward journey.

FAQ

How Much Does a Cruise on the Nile Cost?

Nile cruise prices depend on the length of the sailing, the standard of the ship and the services included. As a rule of thumb, expect $600 to $900 per person for a 3-4 night cruise on a mid-range to luxury vessel, with premium ships and longer itineraries priced higher.

What is the Best Month for a Nile River Cruise?

The most rewarding time to cruise the Nile runs from October to April, when cooler days make sightseeing comfortable. It is best to avoid the peak summer window of May to September, when temperatures climb sharply.

Is the River Nile Cruise Worth It?

Absolutely. A Nile cruise is a wonderfully unhurried way to see Egypt’s ancient sites, pairing scenic river days with guided visits to iconic temples and tombs, all with the comfort and convenience of a floating hotel.

Can You Swim in the Nile River?

Swimming in the Nile itself is not advised, mainly because of water quality concerns and unpredictable currents. Cruise ships generally do not permit swimming in the river.

What is the Dress Code on Nile Cruises?

Onboard, daytime dress is relaxed and casual — light, breathable fabrics work best in the Egyptian heat. Evenings call for smart casual for dinners and events, and modest coverage is appreciated when visiting religious or historical sites.
