First stop is Saqqara, the vast royal cemetery of Egypt’s earliest dynasties. Its centrepiece is the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, the world’s oldest monumental stone structure, raised in the 27th century BCE by the visionary architect Imhotep. Its six stacked terraces mark the crucial leap from mudbrick tombs to the smooth-sided giants that would follow at Giza.
From there you continue to Memphis, the ancient capital founded by King Narmer around 3100 BCE. Most of the great city has long since disappeared beneath silt and fields, but its open-air museum preserves haunting fragments of its former splendour, most memorably the colossal statue of Ramses II reclining under its own shelter, and the finely carved Alabaster Sphinx standing sentinel nearby.
The day ends at Dahshur, a quieter and refreshingly uncrowded pyramid field. Here you meet the intriguing Bent Pyramid, which visibly changes its angle midway up as its builders learned on the job, and the majestic Red Pyramid, Egypt’s first true smooth-sided pyramid and the third largest after the Great Pyramid and Khafre’s.
Once the ancient stones have had their say, you will be driven back to your Cairo hotel in air-conditioned comfort.
