Itinerary

3 Nights from Aswan to Luxor

Day 1: Arrival in Aswan – Aswan City Tour

You are welcomed at Aswan Airport or your hotel by a Daily Pyramids representative, who stays with you throughout the day’s sightseeing. A private air-conditioned vehicle whisks you first to the High Dam, the twentieth-century engineering feat that tamed the Nile’s annual flood and rescued dozens of Nubian monuments from rising waters.

Next comes the Unfinished Obelisk, still resting where the ancient stonemasons abandoned it after a fracture appeared in the granite — a rare, tangible glimpse of pharaonic quarrying at work.

A motorised felucca then ferries you across the water to Philae Temple, the enchanting island shrine of Isis, moved block by block to Agilkia Island to save it from the dam. Time permitting, you can add an optional sail around Elephantine Island and the First Cataract for a look at Aswan’s dramatic river scenery.

Lunch is taken at a well-chosen local restaurant before you board your Nile cruiser for check-in. Dinner is served on board, followed by an overnight in Aswan.

Meals: Lunch – Dinner

Day 2: Kom Ombo & Sailing to Edfu

After breakfast on board, a private vehicle takes you north to Kom Ombo, roughly 45 km from Aswan. The Temple of Kom Ombo is unlike any other on the river — a perfectly mirrored double sanctuary shared between Sobek, the crocodile deity, and Haroeris, a warrior form of Horus.

Your guide walks you through both matching sanctuaries, the hypostyle halls and the ritual chambers, before a short visit to the Crocodile Museum, where mummified crocodiles unearthed nearby are beautifully displayed.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant, then you rejoin the cruise as she casts off for Edfu. The afternoon slips by watching sugarcane fields, riverside hamlets and pale sandstone cliffs slide past — the classic Upper Egyptian panorama.

An onboard briefing prepares you for the morning’s temple visit, and the vessel moors overnight in Edfu.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3: Edfu Temple & Arrival in Luxor

After breakfast, a horse-drawn carriage clatters you through Edfu town to the Temple of Horus, widely considered the most completely preserved ancient temple anywhere in Egypt.

Inside, colossal pylons, vast columned halls and finely cut reliefs tell the mythic contest of Horus and Seth alongside the Ptolemaic rituals once performed here. Because so much of the structure survives, you can climb through nearly every original level, right up to the roof terraces.

Back on board, the cruise pushes on northwards toward Luxor. Lunch is served as you sail.

On arrival you visit Luxor Temple on the East Bank, a monument added to across centuries by rulers such as Amenhotep III and Ramesses II.

Its grand colonnades, open courtyards and sphinx-lined processional avenue evoke the ceremonial heart of ancient Thebes. The cruiser stays moored overnight in Luxor.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 4: Luxor West Bank & Departure

After breakfast and disembarkation, you cross to the West Bank of Luxor — the ancient necropolis of Thebes. The day begins in the Valley of the Kings, where you step inside three royal tombs whose painted walls and inscribed spells were designed to guide the pharaohs safely into the afterlife.

From there you continue to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, a startlingly modern-looking terrace temple carved against the cliffs to honour one of Egypt’s most formidable female rulers.

A final pause is made at the Colossi of Memnon, the two towering seated statues that once framed the entrance to a long-vanished mortuary temple. After lunch, you are transferred to Luxor Airport or your hotel for departure.

4 Nights from Luxor to Aswan

Day 1: Arrival in Luxor – East Bank Exploration

You are met at Luxor Airport or the train station by a Daily Pyramids representative and driven in a private air-conditioned vehicle to your Nile cruise vessel.

Once checked in, the sightseeing begins with a guided walk through the Karnak Temple Complex — the largest religious site ever built, added to and expanded by pharaoh after pharaoh over more than two thousand years.

You continue on to Luxor Temple, a jewel of New Kingdom architecture historically connected to Karnak by the ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant during the day before you return to the ship for dinner and an overnight in Luxor.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: West Bank of Luxor – Sailing Toward Edfu

After breakfast, you cross to the West Bank of Luxor for a guided exploration of the Valley of the Kings, where more than 60 royal tombs preserve some of antiquity’s most vivid painted scenes of the journey to the afterlife.

You continue on to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, a magnificent terraced sanctuary sculpted into the cliffs and dedicated to Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh.

A short stop follows at the Colossi of Memnon, twin monumental figures marking what remains of Amenhotep III’s once-vast mortuary temple.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant, after which you rejoin the cruise as she casts off south towards Edfu. Overnight is spent on board while sailing.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples

The cruise reaches Edfu, where a horse-drawn carriage clatters through the town to the Temple of Horus for a guided visit.

Exceptionally well preserved and dedicated to the falcon-headed Horus, this Ptolemaic sanctuary is often described as the most complete ancient temple in the country.

Back on board, the vessel sails on to Kom Ombo, where you explore a rare double temple shared between Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, a form of Horus.

Its perfectly mirrored plan and dramatic riverside setting make it one of the most distinctive stops along the Nile. Lunch is served on board as the cruise continues towards Aswan.

Overnight is spent on board in Aswan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Aswan Highlights and Nile Sailing

The morning starts at the High Aswan Dam, the modern colossus that reshaped Egyptian farming and water management by giving rise to Lake Nasser.

Next comes the Unfinished Obelisk, a massive shaft still lying in its granite quarry, offering a rare window onto the tools and techniques of ancient stonecutters.

A motorboat then carries you across to Philae Island for a guided tour of the Temple of Isis, a Ptolemaic sanctuary painstakingly relocated stone by stone after the Aswan Dam was built.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant, followed by a traditional felucca sail around Elephantine Island — a peaceful way to take in Aswan’s granite outcrops and easy river life.

You return to the cruise for your final night on board.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Departure from Aswan

After breakfast on board, you check out of the cruiser. A private air-conditioned vehicle then transfers you to Aswan Airport or the train station for your onward journey.

FAQ

How Much Does a Cruise on the Nile Cost?

Nile cruise prices vary with the length of the itinerary, the standard of the ship and the services included. As a guide, expect to pay around $600 to $900 per person for a 3-4 night sailing on a mid-range to luxury vessel. Longer voyages and top-tier ships with additional amenities will sit above this range.

What is the Best Month for a Nile River Cruise?

The most rewarding time to cruise the Nile is between October and April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and ideal for sightseeing. It is best to avoid the peak summer months of May to September, when the heat in Upper Egypt can become intense.

Is the River Nile Cruise Worth It?

Absolutely. A Nile cruise remains one of the most rewarding ways to see Egypt, blending unhurried river scenery with expertly guided visits to legendary temples and tombs. The combination of comfort, ease of travel and cultural depth is hard to match anywhere else.

Can You Swim in the Nile River?

Swimming in the Nile itself is not advised, largely because of water quality, wildlife and strong currents in places. As a rule, cruise operators do not permit guests to swim in the river, though most ships have a pool on the sun deck.

What is the Dress Code on Nile Cruises?

By day, dress on Nile cruises is relaxed and comfortable, with light, breathable fabrics best suited to the climate. Evenings tend to call for smart casual attire at dinner and onboard events, while modest clothing — covering shoulders and knees — is expected when visiting religious sites and living villages.
