Your first stop is the Giza Pyramids themselves, with time at the towering Great Pyramid of Khufu, the elegantly proportioned Pyramid of Khafre and the smaller yet no less remarkable Pyramid of Menkaure.
Then comes the moment with the Great Sphinx, that lion-bodied, pharaoh-faced sentinel who has watched over the plateau for thousands of years. Walk between the sandstone giants of the Hypostyle Hall, wind past shrines and obelisks, and pause at the sacred lake at the heart of this sprawling sanctuary devoted to Amun-Ra.

After breakfast, cross the Nile to Luxor’s West Bank, the necropolis of ancient Thebes and one of the richest archaeological landscapes on earth.
First stop is the Valley of the Kings, the desert wadi that hides the tombs of Egypt’s pharaohs, including the famed resting place of Tutankhamun. Step down into the painted chambers and let your guide read the walls with you, tracing the stories carved into the hieroglyphs.
Next comes the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, its ascending terraces cut into the cliff face in tribute to Egypt’s formidable female pharaoh.
Round off the morning at the Colossi of Memnon, the pair of massive seated statues of Amenhotep III that have greeted travellers to the West Bank for millennia.

Following breakfast, step ashore for the Temple of Horus at Edfu, dedicated to the falcon-headed god. Remarkably intact, it is one of the finest examples of Ptolemaic temple architecture in the country, its walls dense with reliefs of mythical combats between Horus and Seth.
Return to the ship for lunch as the Nile carries you onward to Kom Ombo. Here you visit the unusual double temple honouring both Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon god. Admire its perfectly mirrored plan and the delicate carvings, then step next door to the Crocodile Museum for a closer look at mummified crocodiles and the cult that surrounded them.

You start at the Aswan High Dam, the mighty modern feat of engineering that reshaped Egypt’s relationship with the Nile and transformed its irrigation and electricity supply.
From there, a short motorboat ride carries you across to Philae Temple, sanctuary of Isis, goddess of love and magic. Rescued from rising waters and rebuilt stone by stone on Agilkia Island, its reliefs and its serene island setting make this one of the loveliest temples in the country.
