Tipping Guidelines in Egypt

Tipping (“baksheesh”) is a customary way to show appreciation for good service in Egypt. Though not mandatory, it is widely appreciated:

  • Tour guide: $15–$20 per day per group
  • Driver: $5–$10 per day per group
  • Nile Cruise crew: $5–$10 per person per night (shared among staff)
  • Hotel staff (porters, housekeeping): Small tips of $1–$2

Tipping is generally not included in your package price. We recommend carrying small USD or EGP bills for tipping convenience.

FAQ

What is the Best Time to Travel to Egypt?

Egypt is at its most inviting between November and February, when winter skies are clear, the desert air is cool, and hours spent among the pyramids and temples feel effortless. It is wise to steer clear of the deepest summer weeks from June to August, when the thermometer can climb well past 40°C (104°F) across much of the country and midday sightseeing becomes hard work.

What is needed to enter Egypt?

Before you fly into Egypt, make sure the following are in order:

  • Passport: Valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

  • Visa: Depending on your nationality, you may need to arrange one in advance or pick it up on arrival, while some passport holders can apply online for an e-visa.

  • Travel Insurance: Strongly recommended to cover medical care and any unexpected hiccups during your stay.

  • Vaccinations: None are formally required for entry, but a quick chat with your doctor before departure is a sensible step for any recommended jabs.

Is it Safe to Travel to Egypt Right Now?

Egypt is, by and large, a safe and welcoming destination for travellers. A visible tourist police presence, careful security around the main sites and long experience hosting international visitors all help you feel at ease. Even so, it is worth glancing at your government’s current travel advice and keeping half an eye on local news while you are here.

How do I book a trip?

  • Decide Your Travel Dates and Budget
Start by settling on when you would like to travel and roughly what you are happy to spend. Those two anchors make choosing flights, hotels and tours far easier.

  • Choose Your Itinerary and Destinations
From Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza to Luxor, Aswan, a Nile Cruise, Alexandria and the Red Sea resorts, Egypt has more highlights than any single trip can hold. Pick the places that speak to you and decide how many nights each deserves.

  • Find a Reliable Tour Operator or Travel Agency
Book through a trusted local Egyptian operator, an international agency or a specialist online platform. Reading recent reviews and independent ratings is the quickest way to sort the dependable from the doubtful.

  • Select a Tour Package or Customize Your Trip
Ready-made packages bundle flights, hotels, transfers and guided touring for a hassle-free trip, while a tailor-made itinerary lets you shape every stop around your interests, pace and budget.

  • Make a Reservation
Once you have chosen your programme, get in touch with the operator to confirm availability. You will share your traveller details and settle either a deposit or the full price, in line with their booking policy.

  • Prepare Your Travel Documents
Check your passport dates, apply for an Egyptian visa if you need one, and keep printed or digital copies of your itinerary, hotel vouchers and tour confirmations to hand.

  • Pack and Get Ready
Pack for the season and the sights ahead. Comfortable walking shoes, high-factor sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a universal travel adapter belong at the top of the list.

  • Enjoy Your Trip!
On landing, follow the plan your team has put together, keep your guide or agency contact close, and give yourself over to the layered wonders of Egypt.

Is Tipping Included in the Tour Price?

Tipping, known locally as “baksheesh”, is woven into daily life in Egypt and is generally not built into your tour price. Guides, drivers, porters and hotel staff all appreciate a small gesture of thanks in cash, scaled to how attentive the service has been. As a working guide, around 10-15% of the bill or service cost is a fair and welcome amount.
