An early breakfast, then a scenic drive to Alexandria, Egypt’s Mediterranean city where Pharaonic, Greek and Roman worlds have long overlapped.
First stop: the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a 2nd-century AD underground necropolis that spirals down through carved chambers where cultural influences blend on the walls of every tomb.
Next, admire the lone silhouette of Pompey’s Pillar, a Roman column raised in honour of Emperor Diocletian, and wander among the neighbouring ruins of the Serapeum, once a great temple to the god Serapis.

Head out with your guide for a three-part tour tracing the earliest chapters of pyramid building.
First stop is Saqqara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest stone pyramid in existence and a six-tiered leap forward in ancient architecture that set the template for the smoother-sided giants to follow.
Next comes Memphis, Egypt’s very first capital, where a colossal recumbent statue of Ramses II still holds court amid palm-shaded gardens.

Today’s route through Cairo threads together the city’s fortresses and faiths. Begin at the Citadel of Salah El Din, a mighty hilltop stronghold founded in 1183 AD on Mokattam Hill, with commanding views over the rooftops and minarets of the capital.
Within its walls sits the Mohamed Ali Mosque, an Ottoman-era masterpiece clad in pale alabaster and topped with a rhythm of domes and slender minarets. Take a moment in its calm courtyards to notice the layered craftsmanship overhead.
From there, descend into Old Cairo to explore its quiet lanes. Visit the Abu Serga Church, long associated with the Holy Family’s shelter during their flight into Egypt, then the Hanging Church with its timber ceiling and treasured icons perched above Roman ruins, and finally the Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of Egypt’s oldest Jewish houses of worship.

This morning, transfer to Cairo International Airport for a short domestic flight down to Aswan, the gentle southern city where Nubian culture holds sway.
Our representative meets you on arrival and drives you straight to your hotel. The rest of the day is unstructured, yours to rest or explore as the mood takes you.
Consider a slow walk along the Nile Corniche, a glass of ruby-red hibiscus tea at a shaded ahwa, or a felucca sail as the sun turns Elephantine Island gold.

By afternoon you board your Nile cruise ship for a welcome lunch on deck and the first slow miles of your journey through Upper Egypt.

Cross the river to Luxor’s West Bank, once the sacred necropolis of ancient Thebes. Explore the Valley of the Kings, the desert-locked burial ground where pharaohs including Tutankhamun were laid to rest in tombs bright with painted scenes.
From there, follow the road to the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, its terraces rising dramatically against a sheer cliff wall and dedicated to one of Egypt’s most remarkable female rulers.
Round off the morning at the Colossi of Memnon, twin sentinels that have stood guard over the plain for more than 3,400 years.
