Itinerary

3 Nights from Aswan to Luxor

Day 1: Arrival in Aswan – Aswan City Tour

You are welcomed on arrival at Aswan Airport, or collected from your hotel, by a representative who stays with you throughout the local programme. A private air-conditioned vehicle then whisks you off to Aswan’s headline sights, starting at the High Dam — a titan of twentieth-century engineering that tamed the Nile’s floods and rescued a string of Nubian monuments from the rising waters.

From there you move on to the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in the granite bedrock of the ancient quarry where a hidden crack forced its abandonment — a vivid, hands-on window onto how the pharaohs’ craftsmen shaped stone.

A motorised felucca next carries you across the Nile to Philae Temple, the graceful island shrine of Isis that was famously transferred, block by block, to Agilkia Island. If you wish, you can add on an easy sail around Elephantine Island and the First Cataract, where the river braids around its granite outcrops.

Lunch follows at a local restaurant before you board the Magic II for check-in. Dinner is served on board and you spend the night moored in Aswan.

Meals: Lunch – Dinner

Day 2: Kom Ombo & Sailing to Edfu

After breakfast on board, a private vehicle takes you the roughly 45 km north to Kom Ombo. Here you tour the Temple of Kom Ombo — a fascinating double sanctuary laid out in perfect mirror-image, honouring the crocodile-god Sobek on one side and Haroeris, a form of Horus, on the other.

You’ll walk its paired sanctuaries, hypostyle halls and ritual chambers, and step into the adjoining Crocodile Museum, where mummified crocodiles unearthed near the temple are on display.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant, after which you rejoin the ship as it begins its slow drift north towards Edfu. The afternoon slips by with cane fields, riverside villages and pale sandstone bluffs sliding past — the classic scenery of Upper Egypt.

A briefing on board prepares you for tomorrow’s visit, and the vessel moors overnight at Edfu.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3: Edfu Temple & Arrival in Luxor

After breakfast, a horse-drawn carriage clatters you into Edfu town for a guided visit to the Temple of Horus — the most completely preserved ancient temple anywhere in Egypt.

Inside, immense pylons, cavernous halls and finely cut inscriptions bring alive the myth of Horus and Seth as well as the ceremonial life of the Ptolemaic era. Because the building is so intact, you can climb through nearly every level of its original architecture, right up to the roof terraces.

Back aboard, the cruise continues north towards Luxor and lunch is served as you sail.

On arrival you visit Luxor Temple on the East Bank, a monument shaped over centuries by rulers including Amenhotep III and Ramesses II.

Grand colonnades, sun-washed courtyards and its sphinx-lined processional avenue lay bare the ceremonial soul of ancient Thebes. The ship moors overnight in Luxor.

Meals: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 4: Luxor West Bank & Departure

After breakfast and disembarkation you cross to the West Bank, the great necropolis of Thebes. First stop is the Valley of the Kings, where three royal tombs unfold with painted walls and sacred texts written to guide the pharaohs safely through the afterlife.

You continue to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, a soaring, terraced masterpiece set against the cliffs and built for one of Egypt’s most formidable female rulers.

A final pause is made at the Colossi of Memnon, the pair of monumental statues that once stood watch at the gate of a vast mortuary complex. After lunch, you are transferred to Luxor Airport or your hotel for onward travel.

Meals: Breakfast

4 Nights from Luxor to Aswan

Day 1: Arrival in Luxor – East Bank Exploration

On arrival at Luxor Airport or the railway station, you are greeted by a representative and driven in a private air-conditioned vehicle straight to your Nile cruise vessel.

After check-in, your journey begins with a guided walk through the Karnak Temple Complex — the largest religious structure ever raised, expanded over two thousand years by generations of pharaohs.

You then move on to Luxor Temple, a New Kingdom masterpiece once joined to Karnak by the ceremonial Avenue of Sphinxes.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant during the day before you return to the ship for an overnight moored in Luxor.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: West Bank of Luxor – Sailing Toward Edfu

After breakfast you cross to the West Bank of Luxor for a guided exploration of the Valley of the Kings, where more than 60 royal tombs preserve some of the most vividly painted afterlife scenes to survive from the ancient world.

Next comes the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, an architectural marvel that steps up the cliff face in bold terraces and honours Egypt’s most powerful female pharaoh.

A short stop at the Colossi of Memnon follows — two seated giants marking what remains of Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant, then you return to the ship as she casts off south towards Edfu. Overnight is spent on board as the Nile flows quietly past.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples

The ship arrives at Edfu, where a horse-drawn carriage rolls you into town for a guided visit to the Temple of Horus.

This exceptionally well-preserved Ptolemaic sanctuary is dedicated to the falcon-god Horus and ranks among the most complete ancient temples anywhere in Egypt.

After the visit you rejoin the vessel as she pushes on towards Kom Ombo. There you explore an unusual double temple honouring both Sobek, the crocodile-god, and Haroeris, a form of Horus.

Its mirror-image floorplan and riverside perch make it one of the most distinctive monuments along the Nile. Lunch is served on board as you sail, and the ship continues towards Aswan.

Overnight on board in Aswan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Aswan Highlights and Nile Sailing

The day opens at the High Aswan Dam, a landmark feat of modern engineering that reshaped Egyptian farming and water security by creating vast Lake Nasser.

You next visit the Unfinished Obelisk, a colossal granite monolith left half-carved in its quarry — a rare, tangible glimpse into ancient stone-working methods.

A short motorboat ride then delivers you to Philae Island for a guided visit to the Temple of Isis, a Ptolemaic sanctuary painstakingly relocated after the Aswan Dam was built.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant, followed by a leisurely felucca sail around Elephantine Island — an unhurried way to take in Aswan’s granite outcrops and everyday river life.

You return to the cruise vessel for one last night on board.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Departure from Aswan

After a final breakfast on board you check out of the ship. A private air-conditioned vehicle then transfers you to Aswan Airport or the train station in good time for your onward journey.

FAQ

How Much Does a Cruise on the Nile Cost?

Nile cruise prices shift according to how long you sail, the standard of the vessel and what is bundled in. As a rough guide, expect roughly $600 to $900 per person for a 3-4 night cruise on a mid-range to luxury ship. Longer voyages on premium boats with fuller inclusions can rise above that band.

What is the Best Month for a Nile River Cruise?

The sweet spot for cruising the Nile runs from October to April, when cooler, drier days make sightseeing genuinely pleasant. It is worth avoiding the peak summer months of May to September, when temperatures can climb to punishing highs.

Is the River Nile Cruise Worth It?

Absolutely — few ways of seeing Egypt match a Nile cruise. You wake to changing river scenery, step ashore with a guide at the great temples and tombs, and return each afternoon to a comfortable, moving hotel. It’s convenient, deeply cultural and quietly memorable.

Can You Swim in the Nile River?

Swimming directly in the Nile is not advised. Water quality, unseen currents and boat traffic all pose real hazards, and cruises do not offer river bathing as part of the programme.

What is the Dress Code on Nile Cruises?

Daytime dress on Nile cruises is relaxed and practical — light, breathable fabrics work best in the heat. Evenings on board lean smart-casual, particularly at dinner. When visiting temples, mosques or churches, cover shoulders and knees out of respect for local custom.
